Located in the urban fringe of Coimbatore, Pod of Canvas acts as a social art space that promotes a creative environment for its city dwellers. Situated on a simple flat rectangular site of around 2300 sq.ft (60’0”x38’6”), this private atelier is designed to be an intimate haven for an artist seeking a retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Primary geometries around the site inspired the form of the studio. The gallery confines within a cubical boundary while the carved-out curves create a visual and functional parallax. The curvilinear panels used on the facade allow for the inhabitants to navigate the tailored spaces inside and nurture a sense of directionality.
The concave curve in the east is to bring in light as the studio functions throughout the day. The curves on the west and south elevations hinder the harsh sunlight from entering the structure during afternoons and evenings. This offset mends physical boundaries to introduce green pockets into the site.
The indoor spaces were intended to have varied functions at various times of the year. This was achieved with the use of a post-tension concrete slab. Moreover, large windows were incorporated into the design to ventilate the vast open spaces with natural light while maintaining strong visual connectivity with the surroundings.
Contrasting shades of black, grey and white finishes are used in the interiors such as black PU paint finish for the walls; American- white oak finish for the furniture; grey vitrified tiles for the flooring; and Archi-concrete finish for the ceiling. This creates a neutral background for the art and the dwellers while letting the space be highlighted. These design iterations foster a pleasant environment for workshops, performance arts, and viewing galleries.
This private art studio goes beyond being a mere workspace; it becomes a retreat where the artist can seamlessly blend their creative process with the tranquillity of the residential neighbourhood. Through thoughtful design and an appreciation for simplicity, this studio emerges as a haven for artistic exploration and a harmonious extension of the artist’s vision within the peaceful confines of its surroundings.
