Light is God

Along the stretch of the Noyyal River lies a 1,30,000 sqft trapezoidal land of industrial complex by SAG Apparels (Asia’s first net-zero garment manufacturing facility). Designed to accommodate 700 staff, the layout ensures ease of use, directional flow, and functional spaces. This meticulously planned industrial compound comprises a factory, staff dining and office spaces along with wide roads and courtyards to create systematic nodes and transitions between spaces.

The project visually emphasises the chronology of the activities partaken within this massive industrial estate. From transportation to docking, and further processing, packaging and transporting the materials, each task has a zoned space. While the site is diligently zoned, the built spaces follow an open plan to foster interaction between workers of different tasks and hierarchies: boasting a highly interactive and surveillant space.

The factory has a contemporary take on pitched roofs and dichotomy of a material’s nature. While the glazing helps by ventilating natural light within the factory, the GI Aluminium sheet cladding helps regulate heat in the interiors. The factory’s built follows a typical framed structure that transfers load from metal slab/ roof to foundation through beams and columns.

A cluster of edges and juxtaposing hues create a visual illusion of a multifaceted structure.  Pristine white and grey walls punctuated with greenery intermittently provide year-round shading. The aluminium windows provide the office with comfortable daylight for productivity. Moreover, wooden laminates and Archiconcrete in the office interiors enhance the working experience. A main light-reflecting courtyard enlivens the factory within a heavily mechanical complex. Further, a light and airy office is invoked through multiple private courtyards.

On the sustainability front, the factory is Platinum LEED, and USGBC certified. Making it Asia’s first net-zero garment manufacturing facility.Evaporative cooling system has been used for the factory’s HVAC, reducing the embodied energy used by the factory complex. The design reflects our commitment to be harmonious with nature, leaving minimal impact on the land.
